Design Build for Helping Link

Spring quarter 2010

Design build project from my year at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA.
Made as a team of 16 students under the instruction of teacher Steve Badanes, Chad Robertson and Ashley Muse.

This project was made for the Vietnamese help organisation Helping Link in the International District of Seattle. One of their requirements was more space than what they had in their current rooms. Space for the children to play in, for the elderly to play chess and a good gathering area. There was room for a terrace outside of their front door, but then their current stairs and deck had to be torn down and replaced with a new way to get up to the second level. This was done with a new placement of the stairs and a ramp was added to make this deck accessible for old and disabled people, which was another main issue.

Another problem was that vagrants used to occupy the space at night and leave trash and debris after them. With that in mind we decided to close off our deck with a bamboo fence to limit the accesibility only to the people of Helping Link. We wanted to create a welcoming, functional, representative and culutrally appropriate extension of the organizations activity.
